I believe that the key to any type of change and growth is compassion.
About
When we look at ourselves with compassion, we can move beyond self-blame, guilt, and self-destructive patterns. Looking at ourselves with compassion can give us the freedom that we need to break free from the preconceived notions and limiting beliefs that are holding us back.
The forward momentum that compassion creates - where we can lean into adversity and pain and truly see our own potential - is what allows us to envision ourselves and our lives as we truly want them to be. And it allows us to go further than simply managing symptoms or putting out fires, and to enter into a place of true growth and personal fulfillment.
I’m Howard Baumgarten, a Licensed Professional Counselor, and I’m passionate about helping you rise above the difficulties that are holding you back, and create a life of resilience and fulfillment.
Therapy
I’ve been working as a therapist for over 25 years, and opened my practice as a clinical therapist in 2000. I provide counseling for a variety of mental health related issues.
Public Speaking
Since 2008 I have traveled around the country and internationally teaching and facilitating seminars. I often give mental health workshops about compassion fatigue, burnout prevention, resilience and compassion cultivation. My seminars also focus on a number of topics, such as teamwork, communication and conflict in the workplace, dealing with grief and loss, and critical incident training.
Writing
My book, Private Practice Essentials: Business Tools for Mental Health, was published in 2017, and has provided many therapists with the tools, techniques and strategies that they need to find success in their private practices.
Consulting
As the owner of two successful small businesses, and an ethically responsible researcher, I work as a consultant for small business owners. Specifically, I often work with health care- businesses, particularly those in the area of mental health or other specialty practices. Running a business involves knowing when and how to be technical while, at the same time, building your passion for it, and infusing your practical business skills with all the passion you have for the work that you do.
A bit more about me:

After earning my Masters in Psychology and Counselor Education from the University of Colorado in 1997, I first worked as a Neurobehavioral Counselor & Family Services Coordinator, providing support, family therapy, and marriage counseling to traumatic brain injury patients and their families.
My book, Private Practice Essentials: Business Tools for Mental Health, was published in 2017, and has provided many therapists with the tools, techniques and strategies that they need to find success in their private practices.
I taught at University of Colorado, Denver, where I originated, developed and taught in a nationally accredited graduate counseling program curriculum on how to successfully start and manage a private practice.
I’m passionate about helping people just like you rise above their difficulties, and discover the resilience and light that’s already inside.
